Art as self care

We become painters through a soul experience of the world of colour, through learning to live with the colours, feeling what each individual colour tries to convey.

– Rudolf Steiner, The Arts and Their Mission, GA 276

Experience the therapeutic qualities of artistic expression.

Painting is all about relationship, how the colours and forms interact. Contrast and similarity, harmony and dissonance, tension and resolution, clarity and softness, foreground and background, expectation or surprise, strong boundaries or blending: all of these polarities are at work in both artistic and everyday human relationships.

For the first term, each week we will explore a specific artistic dynamic in a way that will not only improve our artistic skills but also help us understand ourselves and our relationships better.

Originally from Chicago, USA, Martin Schmandt worked as a class teacher in two Waldorf schools in the USA and UK for over 20 years. In the recent decade, he has also started mentoring Waldorf teachers in various countries. In addition to teaching, he is passionate and experienced about working with teachers and adults in art.

He joined IWS in 2022 as Education Coordinator, a role in which he supports and coordinates the development of pedagogical excellence throughout the entire school.
